Raspberry and the gut barrier: the everyday one

Every range has an everyday member, the one you reach for without thinking. For Vekovia that's Raspberry. It leans on the most basic fact about Akkermansia muciniphila, which is where the bacterium lives.
Named for the lining
When Muriel Derrien and colleagues described the bacterium in 2004, they named it muciniphila, "mucin-loving", because it lives on and feeds on the mucus that lines the gut (Derrien et al., 2004). That two-layer mucin barrier is the through-line of Akkermansia's biology, and the comprehensive reviews of the field keep coming back to it (Cani et al., 2022; Ioannou et al., 2025).
Where raspberry fits
Raspberry (Rubus idaeus) belongs to the ellagitannin-rich polyphenol family, the same broad class as pomegranate. Those polyphenols are studied for their effects on the gut barrier and microbial diversity, and they're the precursors to urolithin A, which has been shown in research to support gut-barrier integrity via the Nrf2 pathway (Singh et al., 2019).
Let's be straight about the evidence
This is the place to be honest. The raspberry-specific Akkermansia literature is thinner than for bilberry or pomegranate. What Vekovia · Raspberry leans on instead is the broader, better-supported story: the mucin layer, the gut barrier, and the ellagitannin–urolithin family raspberry belongs to. A raspberry-specific claim would go past what we can back, and we would rather say so than dress the gap up. That restraint runs through the whole brand.
On the label, the small dose of riboflavin (vitamin B2) carries its authorised claim: it contributes to the maintenance of normal mucous membranes, and the gut lining is exactly that.
The case for raspberry rests on the general biology rather than on a trial of its own. When a raspberry-specific study exists, we will write about that instead.
