Why we don't make claims (and why that's the point)

If you've read our other posts, you've probably noticed the same move over and over. We describe what a study found, name the researchers and the year, and then stop. We never finish the sentence with "...so Vekovia will do this for you." That isn't timidity. It's the deliberate centre of how this brand works, and this post explains exactly why.

The line between describing and promising

There's a bright line in how supplements can be talked about in Europe, and most people never notice it because most brands blur it. On one side is describing science: "In a 2019 trial, researchers found X." On the other side is promising an outcome: "Take this to get X." The first is editorial reporting on published research. The second is a health claim — and in the EU, health claims are regulated like the serious things they are.

We do the first. We never do the second. The whole brand is built in the gap between those two sentences.

What the EU rulebook actually says

Under EU Regulation 1924/2006, you cannot attach a health claim to a food or supplement unless that specific claim sits on the official EU Register of authorised claims — and getting a claim authorised requires submitting the evidence to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and clearing its scientific assessment. Separately, EU Regulation 1169/2011 flatly prohibits attributing to any food the property of preventing, treating, or curing a disease.

Here's the part that surprises people: there is no authorised health claim for Akkermansia muciniphila. None. The science is genuinely interesting, the bacterium has its own comprehensive reviews in top journals (Cani et al., 2022) — and the regulator has still authorised exactly zero outcome claims for it. So any brand telling you their Akkermansia supplement "improves" or "supports" a specific outcome is, at minimum, ahead of the regulator. We'd rather be exactly level with it.

The 'on-hold' botanical claims

It gets more nuanced with the berries. When the EU built its claims register, thousands of proposed claims about botanicals and plant substances — including many polyphenol and plant claims — were never finally assessed. They sit in a regulatory limbo usually called the "on-hold" list: not approved, not rejected, just unresolved for years. Different EU member states tolerate them differently, which is precisely the kind of grey area where a careful brand decides to stay out rather than gamble.

So for our berry polyphenols, we don't lean on on-hold claims we can't stand behind. We describe the published research and attribute it. That's available to us regardless of the register's backlog, because reporting on a study is not the same as claiming its result for our product.

Why a single trial isn't a claim either

Consider the strongest human paper we have for the bacterium: the 2019 proof-of-concept trial, in which pasteurised Akkermansia was safe and associated with improvements in metabolic markers in 32 adults (Depommier et al., 2019). It's a real, well-conducted study in a top journal. And it still isn't enough to claim an effect — its own authors called it small and exploratory, and a single 32-person trial is not the evidentiary base the EU regulator requires.

We think that gap is useful to be honest about. "Here is what one careful trial found, and here is why it isn't yet a settled fact" is a more trustworthy sentence than any promise, because it tells you exactly how much weight to put on it.

Why honesty is the strategy, not the constraint

It would be easy to read all this as a list of things we're not allowed to say. That misses the point entirely. We don't experience these rules as a cage. We chose a brand whose entire value is scientific credibility — and for that brand, the discipline is the product.

Three reasons it's the strategy:

  1. Trust compounds. A brand that never oversells is one you can keep believing. The moment we promise something the science doesn't support, every other sentence we've written becomes suspect.
  2. The science is strong enough to stand undressed. When the research is this genuinely interesting, you don't need to inflate it. Describing it accurately is more persuasive than dressing it up — and it ages well, because we never have to walk anything back.
  3. It's how we want to be cited. Content that names primary sources and reports them honestly is the content that gets quoted — by careful readers, by clinicians, and increasingly by the AI search tools people now ask. Hype gets filtered out; attribution gets passed on.

So when you notice us stopping short of the promise you half-expected, that's not a missing feature. That's the feature. We describe the science, we cite the paper, and we let you decide what it means. That restraint is the most valuable thing we own.
