From a Belgian lab to your doorstep: how we source

A supplement is only as trustworthy as the chain behind it, and most chains are invisible. We would rather show you ours. A Vekovia capsule contains a short list of things, and each one can be traced to a specific origin and a specific reason for being there. This post is that trace — from a research lab in Belgium to the bottle on your shelf — written the way we would want a sourcing story written for us.
The bacterium: a Belgian research lineage
The headline ingredient is Akkermansia muciniphila, and not just any version of it. We source the pasteurised form — heat-treated, non-living cells — from the European research lab that holds the EU Novel Food authorisation for it.
That lineage matters more than it might sound. The bacterium's story runs from its 2004 description, through the foundational metabolic research, into the first human trial in 2019 where the pasteurised form proved the more useful one (Depommier et al., 2019). That body of work is what underpinned the EU's authorisation of pasteurised Akkermansia muciniphila as a Novel Food in 2022. The bacterium we use comes from that same authorised source. The comprehensive review of the field sits in Nature Reviews Gastroenterology & Hepatology (Cani et al., 2022).
"Authorised as an EU Novel Food" is a regulatory fact about legal status and safety review. It is not a health claim, and it does not mean the supplement treats or prevents anything — we keep those ideas separate on purpose.
The berries: European, freeze-dried, whole
The second part of the formula is fruit — freeze-dried European berries, paired one to a SKU. The bilberry, the pomegranate, the raspberry: each is sourced from European growers and freeze-dried rather than heat-dried, so that the berry's polyphenols and structure survive the process largely intact.
We pair the bacterium with berries for a reason rooted in the literature, not in marketing instinct. Across the polyphenol research, berry-derived compounds are studied in connection with Akkermansia and the gut environment it lives in. We describe those studies in our other posts and attribute them; here it is enough to say that the berry is in the capsule because the science links the two, and because a whole-fruit polyphenol source is a more honest thing to put in a bottle than an isolated extract dressed up as a hero ingredient.
What's not in it
Sometimes the most useful part of a sourcing story is the short list of things that are absent. A Vekovia capsule contains no preservatives. It does not need them: freeze-drying removes the water that microbes and degradation reactions depend on, which is the whole reason the method suits a stable, shelf-ready capsule. Take the water out gently and you do not need a chemical to make up for leaving it in.
We also keep the ingredient list deliberately short — the pasteurised bacterium, the freeze-dried berry, and one permitted nutrient per SKU. No filler narrative, no proprietary blend hiding the amounts, no kitchen-sink list of trendy additions. If something is in the capsule, we can tell you why it is there and where it came from.
Why we write this down
Transparency is not a marketing flourish for us; it is the product. A premium supplement built on scientific credibility cannot also be vague about its own supply chain — the two would contradict each other. So we trace the bacterium to its authorised European source, the berries to European growers, and the absence of preservatives to a preservation method that makes them unnecessary.
When the supplier contract language is finalised, we will sharpen exactly how we name the Belgian lab on the label and the product page. Until then, this is the honest version: a European research bacterium, European berries, no preservatives, a short list you can read in full.
