Five ways to understand a microbiome study.

Five questions to ask before a finding becomes a reason to buy something.

1. What was actually tested?

Start with the intervention. A whole dietary pattern, a cranberry beverage, a standardised extract and a finished multi-ingredient supplement are different things. Matching a plant name is not enough to establish that two interventions are equivalent.

2. Who was studied, and for how long?

A four-day experiment answers a different question from a long-term trial. Likewise, a group with a particular medical history does not stand in for everyone. Check whether the headline describes human participants, animals or a laboratory system.

3. Was there a comparison?

Without a control group, a before-and-after change is difficult to attribute to one cause. A short cranberry-extract study reported microbiota changes; a separate, longer placebo-controlled cranberry study found limited effects. Read both, rather than selecting the more marketable headline.

4. What outcome was measured?

A change in the relative abundance of a microbe is not automatically an improvement in how someone feels or functions. Keep the measured endpoint separate from an imagined clinical benefit. A larger-looking number is not necessarily a more useful result.

5. Does it test this product?
